In late 1996, I visited a friend who was in the Peace Corps in Senegal, West Africa. This is the well of the village in which she was posted. The village well is the central meeting spot in the village, where news and gossip are exchanged. This village was very small, with no electricity, no cars, and no commercial activity. The village with the weekly market was about a couple miles distant.
