Varanasi (Benares) is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, and is almost certainly the oldest in India. It is also considered to be one of India's holiest cities, and is known as the "city of Shiva". It is stretched out along one bank of the Ganges, and the waterfront is lined with "ghats" - terraces with steps that go down to water's edge. I took this photo in 2011. It is an attempt to re-create a similar photo I took in 1995.
